    Self-organized rock textures and multiring structure in the Duolun crater

    The Duolun impact crater is a multiring basin located 200 km north of Beijing. From the center to the edge of the crater there are innermost rim, inner ring, outer rim, and outermost ring. Recently, we have found some self-organized textures or chaos phenomena in shock-metamorphic rocks from the Duolun impact crater, such as turbulence in matrices of impact glass, oscillatory zoning, or chemical chaos of spherulites in spherulitic splashed breccia, fractal wavy textures or self-similar wavy textures with varied scaling in impact glass, and crystallite beams shaped like Lorentz strange attractors. The rare phenomena indicate that the shock-metamorphic rocks from Duolun crater are formed far from equilibrium. If impact cratering generates momentarily under high-pressure and superhigh-temperature, occurrence of those chaos phenomena in shock-metamorphic rock is not surprising

    Completing Debt Management Plans in Credit Counseling: An Application of the Theory of Planned Behavior

    Psychological factors associated with consumer behavior in completing debt management plans (DMPs) in credit counseling were identified. Guided by the theory of planned behavior, the study used a unique data set combining the survey data along with plan completion status data from a sample of clients of a national credit counseling agency. Findings suggest that consumers are more likely to report their intentions toward completing a DMP when they view completion favorably and anticipate completing the plan with ease, compared to those who view completion negatively and anticipate difficulty in completing a plan. In turn, the study shows that consumersý behavioral intentions directly affect their behaviorýin this case, DMP completion. Furthermore, some evidence suggests that satisfaction with plan services increases consumersý intentions to complete a plan, and also that their perceived control directly and positively affects plan completion behavior. Study findings can be used by credit counselors and educators to develop strategies to help clients successfully complete their DMPs

    How Poverty, Residence Status and Health Insurance Predict Unmet Healthcare Needs among Chinese Elders?

    This study focuses on the variability in unmet healthcare needs among vulnerable Chinese elders and the degree to which these unmet needs are associated with socioeconomic disadvantages. We use the 2013 wave of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and a multinomial logistic model to investigate how poverty, residence status and particular health insurance schemes influence unmet healthcare needs independently and in combination. Our results show that poverty and rural residence are strong predictors of unmet healthcare needs due to financial and non-financial constraints, respectively. Although health insurance can reduce financial barriers, its influence varies with different insurance schemes, thus generating unequal healthcare access among heterogeneous vulnerable subgroups of elders and putting poor rural migrants at the highest risk for unmet healthcare needs. Our findings direct attention to the differences in resources available to various subgroups of elders and the importance of social stratification in predicting unmet health care needs

    Transforming Graphs for Enhanced Attribute Clustering: An Innovative Graph Transformer-Based Method

    Graph Representation Learning (GRL) is an influential methodology, enabling a more profound understanding of graph-structured data and aiding graph clustering, a critical task across various domains. The recent incursion of attention mechanisms, originally an artifact of Natural Language Processing (NLP), into the realm of graph learning has spearheaded a notable shift in research trends. Consequently, Graph Attention Networks (GATs) and Graph Attention Auto-Encoders have emerged as preferred tools for graph clustering tasks. Yet, these methods primarily employ a local attention mechanism, thereby curbing their capacity to apprehend the intricate global dependencies between nodes within graphs. Addressing these impediments, this study introduces an innovative method known as the Graph Transformer Auto-Encoder for Graph Clustering (GTAGC). By melding the Graph Auto-Encoder with the Graph Transformer, GTAGC is adept at capturing global dependencies between nodes. This integration amplifies the graph representation and surmounts the constraints posed by the local attention mechanism. The architecture of GTAGC encompasses graph embedding, integration of the Graph Transformer within the autoencoder structure, and a clustering component. It strategically alternates between graph embedding and clustering, thereby tailoring the Graph Transformer for clustering tasks, whilst preserving the graph's global structural information. Through extensive experimentation on diverse benchmark datasets, GTAGC has exhibited superior performance against existing state-of-the-art graph clustering methodologies

    Characterization, Genomic Organization, Abundance, and Chromosomal Distribution of Ty1-copia Retrotransposons in Erianthus arundinaceus

    Erianthus arundinaceus is an important wild species of the genus Saccharum with many valuable traits. However, the composition and structure of its genome are largely unknown, which have hindered its utilization in sugarcane breeding and evolutionary research. Retrotransposons constitute an appreciable fraction of plant genomes and may have played a significant role in the evolution and sequence organization of genomes. In the current study, we investigate the phylogenetic diversity and genomic abundance of Ty1-copia retrotransposons for the first time and inspect their chromosomal distribution patterns in E. arundinaceus. In total, 70 Ty1-copia reverse transcriptase (RT) sequences with significant levels of heterogeneity were obtained. The phylogenetic analysis revealed these Ty1-copia retrotransposons were classified into four distinct evolutionary lineages (Tork/TAR, Tork/Angela, Retrofit/Ale, and Sire/Maximus). Dot-blot analysis showed estimated the total copy number of Ty1-copia retrotransposons to be about 4.5 × 103 in the E. arundinaceus genome, indicating they were a significant component. Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that Ty1-copia retrotransposons from the four lineages had strikingly similar patterns of chromosomal enrichment, being exclusively enriched in the subterminal heterochromatic regions of most E. arundinaceus chromosomes. This is the first clear evidence of the presence of Ty1-copia retrotransposons in the subterminal heterochromatin of E. arundinaceus. Altogether, these results promote the understanding of the diversification of Ty1-copia retrotransposons and shed light on their chromosomal distribution patterns in E. arundinaceus

    Measuring the declared SDK versions and their consistency with API calls in android apps

    Android has been the most popular smartphone system, with multiple platform versions (e.g., KITKAT and Lollipop) active in the market. To manage the application's compatibility with one or more platform versions, Android allows apps to declare the supported platform SDK versions in their manifest files. In this paper, we make a first effort to study this modern software mechanism. Our objective is to measure the current practice of the declared SDK versions (which we term as DSDK versions afterwards) in real apps, and the consistency between the DSDK versions and their app API calls. To this end, we perform a three-dimensional analysis. First, we parse Android documents to obtain a mapping between each API and their corresponding platform versions. We then analyze the DSDK-API consistency for over 24K apps, among which we pre-exclude 1.3K apps that provide different app binaries for different Android versions through Google Play analysis. Besides shedding light on the current DSDK practice, our study quantitatively measures the two side effects of inappropriate DSDK versions: (i) around 1.8K apps have API calls that do not exist in some declared SDK versions, which causes runtime crash bugs on those platform versions; (ii) over 400 apps, due to claiming the outdated targeted DSDK versions, are potentially exploitable by remote code execution.     Assessing perceived participation among older adults total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty patients six months post-surgery: a cross-sectional study

    AimsThis research sought to assess the perceived levels of participation and autonomy in senior patients who had received total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in Hangzhou, China. Furthermore, the study aimed to identify the factors linked to these outcomes.Study designThis investigation will utilize a cross-sectional study design to assess perceived participation and autonomy among older adults total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients. The research was conducted in Hangzhou, China, at a tertiary hospital.MethodsConvenient sampling was utilized to select 139 patients who underwent THA or TKA between March 2022 and March 2023 and met the inclusion criteria at a tertiary hospital in Hangzhou. The Impact on Participation and Autonomy Questionnaire, Hip/Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS/KOOS), 5-Item Geriatric Depression Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and Elders Health Empowerment Scale were used to assess perceived participation, hip/knee-related symptoms and functional restrictions, depression symptoms, social support, and health empowerment.ResultsThe mean score for perceived participation and autonomy was 22.554 (SD: 13.042). The mean scores for participation in indoor autonomy, outdoor autonomy, family roles, and social relations were 0.654 (SD: 0.608), 1.324 (SD: 0.792), 1.053 (SD: 0.657), and 0.664 (SD: 0.542), respectively. Negative correlations were observed between perceived participation/autonomy scores and HOOS/KOOS, social support, and health empowerment scores. Conversely, a positive correlation was found between perceived participation/autonomy scores and depression scores. The detrimental effect of HOOS/KOOS, social support, and health empowerment scores on perceived participation and autonomy was notable, while the impact of depressive symptoms was comparatively minor.ConclusionOlder Chinese patients, at first six months post THA/TKA surgery, reported higher levels of perceived participation compared to individuals with other conditions, such as stroke patients. Functional limitations resulting from hip/knee-related symptoms, as well as social support and health empowerment, emerged as significant influencing factors for perceived participation and autonomy. This research enhances our comprehension of the elements influencing perceived participation among older adults individuals who have undergone THA/TKA procedures

    Role of tryptophan residues of Erv1: Trp95 and Trp183 are important for its folding and oxidase function

    Erv1 is an FAD-dependent sulphydryl oxidase of the ERV/ALR sub-family, and an essential component of the mitochondrial import and assembly pathway. Erv1 contains six tryptophan residues, which are all located in the highly conserved C-terminal FAD-binding domain. Though important structural roles were predicted for the invariable Trp95, no experimental study has been reported. In this study, we investigated the structural and functional roles of individual Trp residues of Erv1. Six single Trp-to-Phe yeast mutant strains were generated and their effects on cell viability were tested at various temperatures. Then, the mutants were purified from E. coli. Their effects on folding, FAD-binding, and Erv1 activity were characterised. Our results showed that Erv1W95F has the strongest effect on the stability and function of Erv1, and followed by Erv1W183F. Erv1W95F results in a decrease of the Tm of Erv1 by 23°C, a significant loss of the oxidase activity, and thus causing cell growth defects at both 30°C and 37°C. Erv1W183F induces changes in the oligomerisation state of Erv1, along with a pronounced effect on the stability of Erv1 and its function at 37°C, whilst the other mutants had no clear effect on the function of Erv1 including the highly conserved Trp157 mutant. Finally, computational analysis indicates that Trp95 plays a key role in stabilising the isoalloxazine ring to interact with Cys133. Taken together, this study provided important insights into the molecular mechanism of how sulfhydryl oxidases use FAD in catalyzing disulfide bond formation
